The Assumption
of the Blessed Virgin
On this Feast of the Assumption, the main text used in preparation for Pius XII's declaration of the Dogma of the Assumption of Mary body and soul into heaven, is called the "Transitus Mariae". This is an apocryphal text (meaning 'hidden') from the early centuries of the Church, meaning it was never incorporated in the official Catholic Canon of Scripture. It reveals how the early Church venerated Mary as the Mother of Jesus, and the Mother of God, as defined by the
Council of Ephesus in 431AD, from the earliest times.
